Hair Dyeing
Jung wanted to dye her hair for our trip to Japan. First she bleached it an interesting blonde colour then tried to dye it purple, which didn't have the effect she wanted.

Kittens
Rudy's kittens were born so I went with Jung the day after to see them. They were too small to move around on their own but Jung met all the cats for the second time. We were planning to adopt one of them.

Spaghetti Dinner
I tried out my spaghetti recipe on Jung's family. Her dad who normally hates foreign food asked for a second helping, which means it was a success.

The Pussy Palace Rides Again
One of the women who had adopted Samia's first batch of kittens was dissatisfied because the two cats she took weren't disciplined enough. So what better solution than to separate them, ensuring both their hearts would be broken?

Anyway, the returned cat, originally named Knuckles, moved back home and there was a sexy young cat there who he decided to impregnate. His mom. I came to visit during the pregnancy and took some pictures.

Halloween
Jung had never really celebrated Halloween before so we carved a pumpkin together. A long time ago we jokingly suggested we would dress up for Halloween as John Lennon and Yoko Ono and walk around wearing only a bedsheet. Fortunately it has still never happened.

October 16 2005

Boramae
From Boramae we walked home. On the way we explored an abandoned neighbourhood right next to the wedding hall that is scheduled for demolition. Then we passed a Buddhist temple in a neighbourhood where non-Christians are not welcome.

Wedding
My co-worker was getting married so I went to her wedding. Her groom is in the Korean navy so they had to have a formal naval wedding.

Chuseok
I only have one picture that highlights the main ritual of the Korean Thanksgiving. Rather than being thankful for what they have, Koreans make an offering of food for their ancestors. The tops of all these fruits are cut off either to symbolise their consumption by their ancestors or to make it possible for the ghosts to get at the insides. Then of course the food is set aside and generally not eaten (although some of it does get eaten).

Incheon
For no real reason we took the train up to Incheon. We went to an amusement park and then to Chinatown. It turned out it was mostly Koreans who had lived in China, and had very little in common with China. There were no unique restaurants, just jajangmyun and tangsooyook.

Road of New Hope
We took a scooter ride over to Gongdeok where there was a neighbourhood in a state of demolition. Parts of it were still inhabited, other parts were destroyed and defiled, and parts were already being built over with skyscrapers. There are places like this all over Seoul. Wherever you see apartments, there used to be places like this.

Leaving Japan
Check-out was at 10, and our boat left at 3pm, so we had a few hours to kill, and no plan. That means plenty of wandering, loitering, and candid photography.

July 10 2005

Nagasaki
Most of the things we wanted to do on Kyushu were located in Nagasaki, so for the second day of our three-day trip, we decided to head over there. It was a two-hour train ride over. We took a gondola up to the top of a mountain where there was zero visibility and walked around Chinatown, where Jung made friends with a well taken care of stray cat.

Going to Japan
Every six months, every Canadian (aside from those on full-year visas) must leave Korea and re-enter. Not for any particular reason, just to keep us on our toes. Anyway, I decided to thumb my nose at this mandatory tradition and actually turn it into a vacation. So off I went with Jung to Fukuoka on Kyushu Island, the nearest destination from Korea.

On the first day we caught a hydrofoil to Japan, walked around, and found a temple where Jung says they keep the dagger that was used to rape and murder Empress Myungseong, the last empress of Korea.

Again with the Pussy Palace
I returned to take more cat pictures by daylight. On the way home I had to brake to avoid a stopping taxi, and ended up with an ugly scar on my elbow.

Anniversary
So many things to keep track of this time of year. Jung's birthday, Hitler's birthday, our anniversary. I was too stressed to even take pictures

Pussy Palace Part 3
This time I went with Jung, who had started to experiment with getting outside again. She started to realise she might like cats.

March 30 2005

Return to the Pussy Palace
I went back to Samia's place to visit Paul and Samia and take more cat pictures.

March 10 2005

The Pussy Palace
Samia's cat Rudy had kittens with her other cat Orange. I came over to get pictures of the newborn kittens. There were five of them, and I fell in love with a black one I named Seungpa, and he fell in love with me. Unfortunately Jung wasn't sure about owning cats so we didn't adopt him. One of the kittens in this bunch would eventually become the father of Millie.

Laptop Kitty
I was pretty well stuck at home with nothing to do, and I was starting to go crazy, so I took the Laptop Kitty which my sister gave me for Christmas and Jung's stuffed dog Jon and staged photos of them fighting. Not as fun as the real thing but what would I know about that at the time?

November 21 2004

Monday
On Monday I woke up at Jung's parents' place in Sanbon. We went up to Seoul to try to get this thing fixed, an external hard drive that holds about 120 gigabytes but relies on a faulty internal fan. I was late for work this day but didn't miss any classes, and was near the end of my contract anyway.

November 20 2004

Sunday
I went out on a scooter ride after coming back from Seoul and got some interesting pictures. Then it looks like I wound up in Sanbon.

November 13 2004

Birthdays
Unfortunately for Jung, both her parents' birthdays are close to my birthday, so that's three important birthdays she has to prepare for. We all had a big meal at Jung's parents' home. I think this was one of the first times I met them.

November 9 2004

Birthday
For my birthday my students gave me all sorts of little trinkets. The most useful things were these heat pads that can warm your gloves for about an hour. I used them later when I moved from Suwon to Seoul.

November 6 2004

Hwaseong Fortress
I took Jung to Hwaseong Fortress to show her around. This was probably my most thorough visit to the park and I found some of my favourite spots, particularly the area below the wall with all the smashed wall fragments.

November 5 2004

Suwon Station
I was waiting for Jung to arrive so I wandered around and took some candid photos.

November 4 2004

Dusk in Suwon
I drove around Suwon on my scooter and got some pictures as the sun was setting. There are some pretty good pictures in here and some interesting colours. I really like the picture of the convenience store worker squatting in front of a TV that is inexplicably in front of her store.

November 2 2004

Wowsan
Jung and I climbed the small mountain behind Hongik University which I later found out is named Wowsan. We saw a decent sunset, then went back home and ate pornographic food.

November 1 2004

Downtown
The weekend took us to Yongsan to get some minor repairs to my camera, Myungdong to see a punk show, and then to Itaewon where we had Subway.

October 9 2004

Going to Seoul
Just some pictures from one or two nights where I went up to Seoul to see Jung.

September 26 2004

Seoul Tower
I got a bunch of classic photos on a trip up to Seoul Tower with Jung. At the top we had popcorn and dongdongju, and Jung stole some things from a museum.

September 12 2004

Scrabble
The original intent of this page was to show pictures of Jung playing Scrabble. The strain would tire her out, so she would fall asleep while thinking of a word, tile in her hand. I guess I decided the pictures were a little on the inappropriate side so you get biking pictures instead.

August 14 2004

Airport
Ammie was getting ready to go back to Canada so we took the shuttle bus down there. Later that night I went to see Mad Professor, a dub musician, DJ in Itaewon.

July 30 2004

Saturday
Our weekend freedom was in peril as our boss wanted us to come with him and his sons and a couple students to Coex or something. Luckily for us we escaped.

July 24 2004

Hongdae
After Ammie left, Jung and I went out drinking.

July 23 2004

Weekend with Ammie
We went around Insadong, one of the many places you have to go when you're in Seoul. Also we briefly went to Dongdaemoon where we saw a Nazi flag.
