Maybe you don't get the day off school, and there are more presents on Christmas, but on Halloween you get to carve a Jack O'Lantern with your parents and you can roam the neighbourhood after dark in a costume and get free candy. Your two best friends, Richard and Nicole, arrive at your door after sunset. Richard is wearing a Batman costume and Nicole is dressed up as an angel with big white wings. The three of you have pillowcases for carrying candy. Richard is excited to start trick-or-treating. "Where should we go first?" Nicole suggests, We could go to High Street, where all the rich people live." Richard shakes his head. "My parents told me I can't go to the other side of Green Avenue." Where do you want to go? We'll stay nearby. GOTO C1 We'll go to High Street. GOTO B1 ======================================== B1 Your mom gives you a hug before you go. "Be back by nine." High Street is four blocks away. It's on the other side of Green Avenue, a major roadway. Richard steps off the curb, but Nicole stops him. "We can't cross here! It's too dangerous." Richard scoffs. "Oh, it's not far. Besides, there's not much traffic right now." Nicole points at the overpass a block away. "We should go that way." Richard groans. "The overpass? Aw, but that's too far." He jumps into the street and runs across. "Come on!" Nicole walks toward the overpass. What will you do? I'll follow Nicole to the overpass. GOTO B3 I'll follow Richard across the road. GOTO B2 ======================================== B2 You step onto the road and hurry to the other side. But you don't see a car turning around the corner. It hits you and knocks you out. You wake up the next day in a hospital bed. Your leg is broken, and you missed Halloween. But you get a lot of ice cream at the hospital. THE END ======================================== B3 You hurry after Nicole and cross the overpass. Richard is waiting on the other side. High Street isn't as festive when you enter it. Very few houses have Halloween decorations, and most of them have their porch lights off. The porch lights at the first house are off, but you can see lights on inside. The three of you knock and shout: "Trick or treat!" But there is no answer. Richard rings the doorbell, and the light in the house goes out. Nicole crosses her arms. "Some people are no fun." An evil grin grows on Richard's face. "We should play a trick on them." What do you think? Yes, let's play a trick on them. GOTO B41 No, let's get out of here. GOTO B5 ======================================== B41 The three of you huddle together. Nicole whispers, "What kind of prank will we pull?" Richard finds a woodpile next to the garage. You help him set up a wall blocking the garage door. Next, Nicole grabs their garbage can and places it on the front step, so that the front door will knock it over when it's opened. You find the gate to their back yard and quietly take it off its hinges. You plan to put it down by the curb. But then a cat runs out from the back yard. Nicole is frightened. "Oh no, their pet cat! We have to rescue it!" What will you do? We'll catch the cat. B411 Let's go on. GOTO B5 ======================================== B411 The cat runs across the street and jumps up on a fence. While you and Richard distract it, Nicole grabs it from behind. The three of you take the meowing cat back to the house. Richard rings the doorbell. This time, a man answers. "Yes?" Nicole hands him the cat. "We rescued your cat." The man is unimpressed. "This is not my cat." Then he notices the firewood on his lawn and the garbage can next to his door. "Did you kids throw all that junk in our yard?" Nicole puts the cat down, confused. "Yes, but we'll clean it up." "You better." The man gives you rakes. You and Richard start raking leaves, but Nicole doesn't understand. "We didn't put the leaves on your lawn." The man laughs. "I know. Shut up and start raking." Your Halloween is ruined. THE END ======================================== B5 You hurry on to the next house. The woman there gives you each a tiny mint candy. By the time you reach the end of the block, you each have a small amount of candy. You see Nicole's older brother Marc nearby with his friends. Marc is 14 and usually mean to all of you. He chases after you. "Hey! Come over here! Mom says you have to go trick-or-treating with us." Nicole doesn't trust her brother. "You just want to steal our candy." Marc shakes his head. "No, there's a killer in this neighbourhood. They found one of his victims in the park tonight. We have to protect you." Do you want to go with Marc? Yes. GOTO DD1 No. GOTO B6 ======================================== B6 You walk away and forget about Marc and his friends. You head into a safer neighbourhood near Richard's home. After you've gone to a few houses, your bag starts to fill with candy. At one house, the owner gives you each homemade candy apples. "Would you like a cup of hot chocolate?" What will you say? Yes, please. GOTO C2 No thanks. GOTO C3 ======================================== C1 Your mom gives you a hug before you go. "Be back by nine." Nicole looks scared. "Who?" The man opens the door wider. "The Halloween killer. If you come inside, I'll tell you all about him." What will you say? Yes, please. GOTO C2 No thanks. GOTO C3 ======================================== C2 The man brings you each a cup of hot chocolate and sits on a stool. "Every Halloween, there's a mysterious death, or disapearance." Nicole is afraid. "What happens to them?" The man turns on a flashlight. "Sometimes the body is never found. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the Halloween killer strangles somebody in the dark. Sometimes he dresses in a costume and comes to his victims' home. Sometimes he invites trick-or-treaters into his home and gives them poisoned hot chocolate." You are shivering so much that you spill your hot chocolate. The man gets a cloth and wipes it up. "Anyway, be careful out there. Do you have a flashlight?" Nicole shakes her head. "No." The man gives you his flashlight. "Then take mine." I'll take the flashlight. GOTO CC3 I can't accept the gift. GOTO C3 ======================================== C3 You thank the man and head for the next house. On the way, you run into Nicole's older brother Marc and his friends, who are trick-or-treating in the opposite direction. Marc pulls out a foot-long chocolate bar. "Oh yeah? Look what we got." Nicole's eyes widen. "Where did you get that?" Marc points in the direction they came from. "Down at the big mansion on the other side of the ravine." The three of you hurry to the house, eager to get there before they run out of giant chocolate bars. Richard stops when you reach a path into the ravine. "We should take a shortcut." Nicole shakes her head. "No way. It's too dangerous." What will you do? Let's take the shortcut through the ravine. GOTO C4 Let's go the long way. GOTO C5 ======================================== CC3 You thank the man and head for the next house. On the way, you run into some classmates, who are trick-or-treating in the opposite direction, coming toward you. One of them, a short kid named Darwin, pulls out a foot-long chocolate bar. "Oh yeah? Look what we got." Nicole's eyes widen. "Where did you get that?" Darwin points in the direction they came from. "Down at the big mansion on the other side of the ravine. The lights are off but they're all home. They set up a really cool haunted house." The three of you hurry to the house, eager to get there before they run out of giant chocolate bars. Richard stops when you reach a path into the ravine. "We should take a shortcut." Nicole shakes her head. "No way. It's too dangerous." What will you do? Let's take the shortcut through the ravine. You hear someone fall off the path. Richard calls out "Help!" His cape is tangled up in some branches. As you and Nicole free him, you hear something moving through the trees nearby. Nicole grabs your hand. "Hello? Who's there?" The noises stop. What are you going to do? Let's get out of here. GOTO C41 Let's keep going. GOTO C42 ======================================== C41 You tear Richard away from the tree, ripping his cape off. The three of you run up the path the way you came and out onto the street. When you are under a streetlight, you see that Richard's Batman costume is covered with blood. Nicole shrieks. "Oh my god, are you okay?" Richard looks at the blood on his costume. "Yeah, I'm alright." You hurry to Richard's house and tell his mom what happened. She calls the police. Halloween is now over. THE END ======================================== C42 You hurry onward. The ravine is very narrow with steep sides, and the path is narrow. One wrong step and you'll fall down into the stream. Unfortunately, running at night is very dangerous. You step on a tree root and fall over the edge. THE END ======================================== CC4 You follow the path down into the ravine. It's really dark. Too bad there's no full moon tonight. You turn on the flashlight that the man gave you. Richard slips and falls off the path. "Help!" His cape is tangled up in some branches. She calls the police, and they search the ravine. Halloween is now over. THE END ======================================== C5 You follow the sidewalk around the ravine. Richard lags behind, annoyed. "But we walk this way to school all the time." Nicole frowns. "Yeah, in the daytime. Now hurry or we won't get any chocolate." When you reach the house, the lights are off, and the front gate is locked. But there's a sign that says "Special surprise inside! Come right in!" What will you do? Let's go in. GOTO C6 Let's skip this house. GOTO F1 ======================================== C6 You climb the fence and jump down on the other side. Richard gets his cape caught and nearly falls down. As you head up to the door, you hear something growling. There is a vicious looking dog standing right behind you. You run and climb up the nearest tree. Nicole comes after you, and Richard follows. The dog bites his cape and tries to pull him down. "Help me!" What will you do? I'll throw candy at the dog. GOTO C8 I'll run for the front door. GOTO C7 ======================================== C7 You jump out of the tree and run to the front door. The dog is still biting Richard's cape. You ring the doorbell repeatedly. An angry old man answers the door. "What do you want?" Richard looks over at him. "Uh, trick or treat?" The man calls the dog off. "Now get out of my yard." You jump over the fence. Richard's costume is ruined, and the three of you are frightened. It's time to go home. THE END ======================================== C8 You smack the dog in the head with your pillowcase of candy. It whimpers and runs away. You run back to the fence and jump over. "There is no Halloween killer. I just made it up so you'd give us your candy." They leave the three of you behind. Now you have no candy, and no pillowcases to collect candy in. Halloween is over. All that's left to do is play a prank on Marc and his friends. Or maybe you should just go home. Let's go home. GOTO D4 Let's play a prank. GOTO E1 ======================================== DD2 You hand over all of your candy. Marc looks at it in disbelief. "That's it? That's all you got?" Nicole shrugs. "The people on this street weren't being very generous." Marc throws the candy on the ground. "Come on, guys--let's get out of here and find some candy." Nicole steps in his path. "I thought you were going to protect us from the Halloween killer!" Marc laughs at her. "There is no Halloween killer. I just made it up so you'd give us your candy." Bring it back to me so we can smash it." Nicole goes pale. "No! That's horrible!" Marc crosses his arms. "You can do it or you can accept our double-dare." I'll steal a pumpkin. GOTO D5 What's the double-dare? GOTO D6 ======================================== D4 Your mom answers the door when you get home. There is a smile on her face. "Hi. Did you have a fun-" She sees that you don't have any candy. "Oh. Well, come in. Don't worry about this Halloween. There's always next year." You go upstairs and lie in your bed. THE END ======================================== D5 You find a house that has a smiling Jack O'Lantern sitting on the banister outside. As you go up to the pumpkin, a kind woman answers the door. She gives you each a big handful of chocolate, and compliments you on your costumes. Will you grab the pumpkin? Yes. GOTO D52 No. GOTO D51 ======================================== D51 As you're leaving, you grab the pumpkin off the banister, but it falls, smashing apart on the ground. The woman is still standing at the door. She starts to cry. "You ruined Halloween! Get out of here." Down on the street, Marc and his friends laugh at you, then run away. What will you do? I want to get revenge on Marc. GOTO E1 I'll apologise to the woman. GOTO D512 ======================================== D512 You go home and get out your art supplies. You spend all night working on an apology card. You don't even look at the candy you got. The next day, you take the card to the woman's house. When she answers the door, she doesn't recognise you without your costume. You give her the apology card, and she hugs you. THE END ======================================== D52 Nicole grabs the pumpkin and throws it into her pillowcase. Then the three of you run away. The candle inside the pumpkin lights the pillowcase on fire, and she drops it, spilling candy everywhere. Marc and his friends scramble to pick up her candy, and Marc stomps on the pumpkin, breaking it into pieces. Then they run off, leaving Nicole in tears. What will you do now? "Okay, then I have something much worse for you." He pulls three cans of spraypaint out of his bag. "I want you to spraypaint all over that house." He points to a house with no lights on. So Marc and his friends grab your costumes and tear them off. They take all your candy and run away. You walk all the way home wearing nothing but your underwear and an undershirt. THE END ======================================== D8 You take the spraypaint cans and approach the house. Richard spraypaints the garage door. Nicole spraypaints the walls. You spraypaint the windows. Suddenly, a light turns on inside the house. You see a man staring out. "Stay there." He points at you and runs to the door. What will you do? I'll stay here. GOTO D9 I'll run. GOTO GG1 ======================================== D9 The man hasn't seen Richard and Nicole yet. They slip away and hide. But the man grabs you and drags you into his house. "You're in a lot of trouble." He calls the police, and then he calls your mother. Your mother is furious with you. She grounds you for a year, and she pays for the damage using your allowance. THE END ======================================== E1 You find Marc playing video games with his friends in the basement at Nicole's home. You spy on him through the window. Nicole opens the door and you all sneak inside. Richard gets a carton of eggs out of the fridge. "We could throw these at them." Nicole shakes her head. "Not inside. If we do that, we'll have to lure them outside." Richard puts the eggs down. "Well, we could lure them outside and lock them out. Then we could have all the candy for ourselves." What do you think? We will throw eggs at them. GOTO E3 We will lure them outside. GOTO E2 ======================================== E2 You go to the front door, and Nicole hides inside the house. Richard rings the doorbell, and Marc answers it. "Oh, it's you. Where's my sister?" Richard points down the street. "We were being chased by an angry dog, and now she's gone. I don't know where she is!" Marc looks worried. He and his friends put on their shoes and run outside. You lead them around the corner and then run back to the house. Nicole lets you in and you lock them outside. You spend the rest of the night enjoying all the candy. They spend the rest of the night banging on the front door, until Nicole's parents come back. THE END ======================================== E3 You ring the front door and run back to a safe distance. Marc answers it. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?" Nicole throws the egg first. It misses him and hits the door. Richard throws an egg and hits him in the leg. You throw an egg and it hits him in the forehead. Richard wipes the yolk out of his eyes. "I'm gonna get you!" GOTO E4 ======================================== E4 You scurry down the street, eager to get far away from Nicole's house before her brother can come after you. It is getting late and there aren't many trick-or-treaters outside. After a few blocks, Marc and his friends catch up with you, armed with water guns. Nicole sticks out her tongue. "So what? We're not afraid of a little water!" Marc aims the water gun. "We filled these from the toilet!" What will you do? I'll run. GOTO E6 I'll hide. GOTO E7 ======================================== E5 You sneak around to the side of the house. Nicole opens the side door and you slip inside. Then Marc and his friends jump on you. They are coming out of the washroom with waterguns. When they see you, they soak all three of you. Marc laughs. "Ha ha, we filled these water guns with toilet water!" THE END ======================================== E6 You run and hide under a balcony. Nicole and Richard follow after you. It's too small for Marc to fit. He and his friends get on top. He and his friends shoot their water guns on the deck, and it drips down on you. Then the door opens and the owner of the home steps out. "Get away from there!" Marc and his friends run away. You're soaking wet and freezing, and all your candy is ruined. It's time to go home. THE END ======================================== E7 You run away from Marc and his friends. But Richard is too slow, and they drench him with toilet water. When they're all out, they run away. You and Nicole come back to Richard. He's shivering in the cold. "I want to go home." Nicole is annoyed. "But it's not 8:30 yet. We'll get all the best candy right now anyway. People will give us their leftovers." What do you want to do? Let's take Richard home. At the end of the night, people at many homes want to get rid of all their leftover candy. At one place, you each get a huge handful of candy. One woman dumps half a bowl of chocolate into your pillowcases. Between houses, Richard drops his sack of candy and falls over. He can't get up, so you and Nicole call him an ambulance. He has hypothermia, and the ambulance takes you all to the hospital. THE END ======================================== F1 The next house you go to has a long sidewalk to the front door. You see drops of blood all over the sidewalk. Richard's eyes are wide. "Those are pretty scary Halloween decorations." The porch lights are on, and the door is slightly open. Richard pushes the door open wider. "Um, trick or treat?" Nicole shushes him. Her eyes are wide. "Should we go in?" Yes. GOTO F2 No, let's just ring the doorbell. GOTO F3 ======================================== F2 You open the door and step in. Inside the living room, you see a husband and wife and their son tied to chairs. You hurry over and take off the father's gag. "Get out of here! The Halloween killer is in our home!" When you turn back to the door, the Halloween killer is standing in your way. He has a knife in his hand. What are you going to do? I'll run away and try to find a back door. GOTO F4 I'll fight him off using my pillow sack of candy. GOTO F5 ======================================== FF2 The man holds the door open and lets you in. You walk into the living room, where you see a husband and wife and their son tied to chairs. When you turn back to the door, the man is standing in your way. He has a knife in his hand. What are you going to do? I'll run away and try to find a back door. GOTO F4 I'll fight him off using my pillow sack of candy. GOTO F5 ======================================== F3 Richard rings the doorbell and waits a few seconds. "There, see? Nobody is home." Then a man appears at the door. He is wearing a mask. "Hi, would you like some candy? Please come inside." What will you do? Let's go inside. GOTO FF2 Let's not go inside. GOTO G1 ======================================== F4 You run deeper into the house, through the kitchen. There's the back door--but it's covered in plastic wrap! You tear it off and try to open the door, but the Halloween killer grabs you. He ties you and your friends to chairs and drags you into the living room with the others. THE END ======================================== F5 You swing your pillowcase at his head and stun him. Richard uses his pillowcase to knock the knife out of his hand. The three of you run out the front door. The Halloween killer runs to the door. "Come back here! You can't escape me!" Richard plods after you. He is not a fast runner. "Wait for me! I have asthma!" What will you do? I'll run for my life. GOTO G2 I'll slow down for Richard. GOTO G3 ======================================== G1 You and your friends turn around and walk away from the house. You take them back to the house where you saw the Halloween killer. The police rescue the family tied up in the living room, but the killer is gone. And you never see Richard again. Richard tells him your name and Nicole's name, and he calls your mother. Your mother is furious with you. She grounds you for a year, and she pays for the damage using your allowance. When the driver sees you, he turns his siren on. It's the police! The killer tries to run away, but the police catch him. They drive you down to the police station, where you find Nicole. It turns out she got help and called the police. The police are very nice to you. They give you all their leftover Halloween candy, including some very large chocolate bars.
