Korea/Japan Oi! FestivalThis thing went down on June 26, 2004, in Seoul, South Korea. It's a huge-ass gallery so be patient and go get something to drink while this thing loads. Or, if you're on dial-up, go out for dinner and come back.
This first one is more for me than for you, so I can figure out all the band names.
We'll start with Hyul Maeng/Blood Pledge. I only took one good picture of them because I'd seen them a week or two earlier.
Now here's Momul Mallyu, or Nonstop Body, Korea's main chick punk band.
Now here's Captain Bootbois. This is the third Korean band in a row. Hmm.
The lead singer is in the army, so it's rare he gets out for a show.
Yeongsoon from Attacking Forces got up on stage with him.
Korean and Japanese skinheads sing together.
I took a couple quick group photos outside. Most of the people sitting are Japanese.
The first Japanese band was Tabloid Play.
A guy with a kilt...things to come.
The Japanese had a large entourage, so for most of the night there were lots of people outside.
This snarl could only mean it's time for the festival's only non-Oi act, Samchung. Yes, the lead singer's face really does look like that all the time.
Jonghyuk from Hyul Maeng hatches a sinister plan to infect one of the Japanese guys with cancer.
In case you wanted to know what Asian armpit hair looks like.
The next band was Royal Shamrock, a Celt-influenced punk band similar to Real McKenzies and some Dropkick Murphys. They were by far the most original act of the night.
Plus it's not every day you see a guy in a kilt with a Japanese flag patch.
The highlight of the night was the accordionist's face.
Aaa!
Some candids of the Japanese skinheads.
It looks like I wandered outside during Royal Shamrock's set. It could be for one of two reasons: beer or to use the alley.
If you didn't think these guys were multicultural enough, they added a Korean flag.
Somewhat of a group shot to show the crowd pouring out after the set.
Here's some Spiky Brats.
There were quite a few video cameras there, but not many regular cameras.
Here's One For All, another Japanese band.
Now it's time for Couch.
Now it's nap time.
"Hey buddy, what's your IQ?"
Looks like Mike wants out.
And now it's time for the band with the greatest name, Booted Cocks.
This guy would be Paul Bunyan the nazi lumberjack if only Paul Bunyan was Japanese, being a skinhead meant you were a nazi, and that guy on Tokyo Damage Report had any clue what he was talking about.
This was right before the extremely hot part of summer, and inside Skunk Hell was unbearable enough to require me to go outside often.
Jonghee is the guy in the middle.
Having a quick nap.
This is United We Stand. I didn't get any pictures of Jiraltan99 because I was busy beating off.
Another napper.
So, wait a second--they're yellow and we're white? That doesn't seem right.
It's Rux-time.
Looks like a stage-diving accident. Wrong way.
This is Oi! Valcans.
Here's Yeongsoon from Attacking Forces before going on.
Attacking Forces is also known as Gongkyukdae.
Not the best show to wear high heels.
By this time it must have been 3 or 4 in the morning.
This can only be Raise a Flag.
The lead singer looked a little sleepy, but he made it through the set.
Seungpa came back from the gay porn studio.
I took a bunch of external shots afterward while fighting sleep.
Looks like sunrise is close.
