Bye Mike (again)

Mike's one-year stay in Korea is up, and he's moved back to Germany. I had dinner with him and Gigi last Sunday. It sounds like he'll be back in a couple years again, so I doubt this is the last we'll see of him.

Unfortunately I couldn't go to his going-away party in Hongdae on Wednesday because I've gotten tangled up in a big fat web of misunderstanding and Internet vigilantism.

Midnight Boot Party

I spent the evening with Verv and Joe, who'd been drinking since the morning. The alcohol started to wear on us all before long. Joe passed out in a restaurant and woke up with the urge to go home; we talked him out of it. Verv wanted to do something nice for Mike, who's going to Germany, so he volunteered to slash his forehead open so his face would be drenched in blood. I guess the knife was too dull because he couldn't cut it open. Here he is in the mirror trying to intimidate himself into bleeding.

Anyway, it was a fun show, beginning late at 10pm. All four bands were entertaining, and it might not have been crowded but that just gave us more elbow room.

GMC Show

The highlight of the whole show was these three Korean guys wearing fursuits--one flying squirrel, one white tiger, and one Hello Kitty. They moshed and floorpunched their way through most of the show, and at the end they obliged us with group photos. I'm half repulsed and half impressed by their bravery. And damn right I'm proud to pose next to them.

GMC Show

When Donghyun showed up, I asked him to introduce me to his Canadian drummer. It turned out Kirk, the guy I'd been talking to all night, was their new drummer. I was surprised. This gallery features Samchung and Captain Bootbois. For the Bootbois set I spent most of my time in a corner on stage.

GMC Show

The main reason I came to this show was because I heard Captain Bootbois had a new drummer from Canada. I was also looking forward to seeing Joe and Verv again, and I had word that a couple friends were in town from Busan. They never called, and Joe and Verv were very late. At the start of the show, the only other foreigners were Jesse, Diane, and a guy I hadn't seen before named Kirk.

One thing I noticed, and remarked to some of the musicians who hadn't noticed before, was that hardcore shows attract a large proportion of girls. Especially odd considering the prevalence of slogans like "Way of Men" or "Brothers for Life."

Broke in Korea #5

I've released the fifth issue of Broke a little later than I would've liked. Originally I wanted to put it out before the Korean election, but it wasn't ready in time. Then I announced it would come out on Christmas Eve, but I wasn't allowed to go out that night. Instead I gave Verv the file and he printed out 30 copies, so Santa Claus did come after all. I printed 30 more issues for the Terror show and most of them found their way into people's hands that night. Anyway, it's a pretty good issue, although there's slightly less musical content than previous issues. I'll put the articles online soon.

Terror Show

After the show, I rescued three members of Terror who'd been separated from the rest of the band and all their Korean guides.

Terror Show

I really don't know much at all about hardcore, but it's always fun to take pictures at hardcore shows, moreso than other types of music that are further up my alley. Unfortunately there was too much condensation inside, so while I was taking pictures I had a cloth in hand and I would wipe the lens clean between shots. You can see near the end it was getting harder.

Terror Show

The lights inside Skunk were too bright for my usual camera tricks, so I decided to bump up the film speed and shutter speed and take pictures with natural lighting. There's a bit too much noise but it's a different look than my camera usually has. It also turned out to be too slow to capture jumps and fast action, but I didn't have many choices in there with my flash.
