Ska Show

After the ska-punk show I headed for Bar Nana in Itaewon to see a ska show. It turned out there were a few more bands than I was expecting, including GW Snack who played at both shows that night. It's too bad Kingston Rudieska didn't play at Skunk as ska has always been much more closely related with punk than ska-punk (despite what the names might lead you to believe).

Ska-Punk Show

There was a ska-punk themed show at Skunk on Saturday night that ended up being pretty good. I was impressed with Egg Scramble who drift in between ska-punk and traditional ska. If they got rid of the distortion I think they'd start to get a lot of attention. Unfortunately for them ska-punk doesn't quite have a community around it for making connections around the world. Ska Sucks have also become very good at putting on a show. I also saw Royal Winks for the first time, yet another rockabilly-style band that's worth catching. Unfortunately I missed a couple other bands as I was busy postering and drinking.

Joe

There've been a lot of foreign skinheads in Korea in the past, but lately it's felt like just Verv and me. Adam's started showing up again as his time in Korea runs down, and now Joe's arrived. He randomly ran into Verv up in Uijungbu and quickly became Verv's drinking partner of choice. I met up with the two of them on Friday night.

Burning Down the Playground

After the show ended, we hung around Skunk Hell for a while, and Chulhwan bought a large amount of pizza. After it was all done we went to the playground so Paul could relive some of our best times here. I ended up going on a rant asking why Colin Powell wants his name pronounced "Colon" as opposed to the more standard pronunciation. According to the Washington Times,
"Powell's parents, Jamaican immigrants and subjects of the British empire, pronounced their son's name KAH-lin. But Powell's childhood friends in the South Bronx, impressed by the heroic exploits of World War II flyer Colin P. Kelly Jr. (known as KOH-lin), altered the pronunciation and its been KOH-lin Powell ever since."
Which leads to the next question, why did Colin Kelly go by Colon rather than Colin? I think this can be traced all the way back to one early Colon somewhere.

Paul's Last Suck Stuff Show

Here are the pictures of Paul's final show with Suck Stuff. The band is going to continue on without him, with the bassist moving to guitar and a new bassist. I think they might end up sounding more like what they used to. Buil is an entertaining bassist to watch so it'll be interesting to see him on guitar. Not that we won't miss Paul or anything. The band is losing something unique I don't think they could duplicate without him there.

Paul's Last Show

Sunday was Pepero Day, so we had to have a show to celebrate this important holiday. It turns out in other countries, including the one where I'm from, people celebrate Pepero Day by wearing red poppies and having a moment of silence to remember people who died in wars. Anyway, over here it's nothing but Pepero, the way Pepero Day is supposed to be celebrated. Oh yeah, and we were saying bye to Paul who's joining the US army.

Punky Reggae Party

We had our first reggae/soul night of the season. This time I got BJ to play some ska and Sidney to do soul and whatever else he could mix in with that. Adam was the final DJ of the night and he did a great job. Unfortunately by then most other people had left. Since he's leaving in December, we're going to have the next DJ night very soon so he can DJ again.

Punky Reggae Party

On Friday I'm bringing back our DJ night in DGBD, this time with new DJs. BJ just got out of the army so he'll be doing a short set of ska music, and Sidney has some soul music lined up. I'll be starting the night with a short set of dub and then coming back around 2 to play more reggae. Last year these things turned out pretty fun so here's hoping this year goes as well too.

Digger and the Pussycats in Skunk Hell

Mike has been talking about these guys for years since he saw them in Germany, but he finally managed to get them to come to Korea. They were on their way back to Australia after a tour across the US, and because it was on the way they didn't make him pay airfare. They played in Gwangju on Friday and then had two shows on Saturday. These are the pictures from the first show.
