Johnny Royal

Finally finished all the Saturday photos. The last band of the night was Johnny Royal. When they play there's just too much happening. It's really overstimulating if you're trying to photograph them, because everyone is constantly moving. Set up to take a shot of one guy and suddenly he trades places with someone else.

Johnny Royal have been busy in their own world lately, having opened the club Minor League. I've only been there once when there wasn't a show, but it looks like a good place. They're also starting their own collective of some kind, IX Crew.

Skunk Hell

Today I have pictures of Rux, Cock Rasher, Patients, and the Geeks. All that's left now is Johnny Royal.

In a few of my shots you can see a double-flash effect. For example, the title pictures in this entry and the one below. It took me a while to figure out what was happening, but it turns out I was picking up Yubin's flash. She was taking pictures nearby, and every time anyone jumped, her flash went off. I was impressed and it seems she has every stage move by both Things We Say and the Geeks memorised. Judging by her timing she must be a great photographer. I hope she has a webpage somewhere with some of her work.

Skunk Hell

There was an interesting variety of bands playing on Saturday. I got some good pictures of them, but it's taking a while for me to go through them because my computer is running very slow right now. For today all that I've finished is Things We Say and a few of Benzene.

Barbecue

Paul invited Nels and me over to his place for barbecue, his style. We sat around next to the street and tried to burn stuff and threw a ball for Sukie.

I'll have pictures of the show later.

Gongdeok

For a while I've had a hobby called urban exploration. Basically the idea is exploring spaces in urban areas that people don't normally see or visit. This could be anything from abandoned buildings and rooftops to subway tunnels or storm drains (I know my parents will read this so don't worry, I've never done any of the latter two). It started when I was a kid and liked visiting construction sites, and when I moved to Korea I found the abandoned neighbourhoods that herald more highrise construction. Over the past couple years I've visited a number of sites.

  • Dongdaemoon 2005 Paul and I went to Dongdaemoon and slipped inside a burned out building and saw evidence of fire damage. Since then, the buildings have been restored.
  • Gongdeok 2005 Jung and I went on a scooter ride to a neighbourhood that was being torn down to make way for more high rises. Two years later this area is totally gone and is now a construction site.
  • (not yet restored) Boramae area 2005 - After a wedding, Jung and I saw some abandoned apartments and went down to explore. These will be online again in a few months.
  • Sindaebang 2007 On a scooter ride alone I discovered what looked like a disaster zone. I explored the site by myself.
  • Dongdaemoon Grey Market 2007 I returned to Dongdaemoon with Nels, to see the beginning of demolition of the grey market I always visit. It is being torn down to make way for Lotte Castle. I didn't go inside any structures but took a lot of pictures of external damage, including one threatening sign.

This week, I went with Paul and Nels back to the Gongdeok site for a look around. It has fundamentally changed, and we gained entrance only to a few places, including a restaurant and a warehouse. This site is almost totally bulldozed and there isn't much left to see now at all.

    Club Playground

There was a show up in Hyehwa at a strange venue called Club Playground. It seemed they were having a punk musical and this was the afterparty. Inside, the club was plastered with pictures of the playground in Hongdae, which was kind of scary. It was like this venue was stalking the park.

Anyway, I had a guest from out of town and Paul had a guest from out of town. Can you see the resemblance?

    Crossword

There hasn't been much out of me lately aside from archives. I've got caught up on that all I'm going to do for now, and I'll even be out this weekend as my lifelong friend Nels is coming to visit for twelve days. I guess I can't say he's my lifelong friend because he was born a year after me, but I'm his lifelong friend anyway. He moved to New York when he was fairly young and we only got to see each other every couple years, but we always have fun.

Anyway, for today I'm going to put up some different types of content. First off there's a new crossword. You can download the clues.

Also, I've restored several choose-your-own-adventure stories I wrote for work. Take your pick:

The Conquerors A reliable story about the invasion of a large force of barbarians, and your attempts to thwart it.

Dog An at times heart-breaking story where you're a dog trying to rescue your owner.

Space Lobsters A kind of silly idea I got from an episode of Futurama. Your space ship lands on an unexplored planet and there are traces of life near the landing site.

A Very Nuclear Christmas A Christmas special I wrote back at the start of the project. Your sidekick, Sam, is named after a real guy I know named Sam who was working up in Alert for a few months.

Attack of the Skinheads One of the final stories I wrote, this epic follows a pair of newlyweds on their honeymoon to New Zealand, where things are spoiled by the local skinheads. Of course I know nothing about New Zealand skinheads so this is all conjecture mixed with a cartoonish distortion of skinheads. See if you can find Tokyohoon and Verv.

The Garbage Collectors One night I had a dream that Verv and I were born in different circumstances and ended up working together as garbage collectors. It was actually a career ambition that both my sister and I shared when we were young.

Snakes on a Plane Written back when all that was known about this movie was hype, I created a sort of fan fiction based on the limited facts available to me, putting in as many movie cliche scenes as I could. The best scene is the supersized sequence, which I hope they included in the film.

Anyone have any preference for what stories you'd like to see next? Let's see, I've got a MacGyver parody called MacGregor, a viking one where you're the invader, a realistic one about a trip to the moon, a story about being a hooligan at the World Cup, a War of the Worlds adaptation, a Halloween special, a hilarious date one, another ancient war one where you help the Bohemians drive off the Mongol Hordes, a New York travel one where you spend half the time trying to find a parking spot, and a mashup of fairy tales that worked pretty well. There's more but these are the best.

    Indecline 2005 Archives

Now I've put up the rest of April 2005 and most of May. There's quite a lot that was happening around then, and a lot of people passed through Hongdae who are worth remembering. Some were weirdos like the Jesus dude and the swing kid, and some were worth seeing, such as Jesse and Megan, and some were leaving, such as Amanda and Jane. Paul and I were still unemployed and wasted our days wandering around, joined by Megan for a few weeks.

    Indecline 2005 Archives

I'm working on restoring all the pictures I've posted of Korean punk to my site. So far I've gotten up the return of Paul, the return of Crying Nut (although they didn't appear for it), Joey joining Rux, the Champion tour, and much more. Early 2005 was a promising time, and everyone dressed up a little more colourful than usual. I think it has something to do with Donald K starting to offer his services. Anyway, go have a look, and soon I'll whip out a few more months.

    Indecline Archives

This weekend I went through all my old CDs and found the original photos I'd formatted for my old site. It was a relatively simple matter to post them online here. I'll be able to restore my archives from December 2003 to present over the next few weeks. They're going to be posted here for your convenience, but I'll erase them quickly as new ones come in.

These pictures show a time when the Korean punk scene was much different. There were fewer shows, usually only one per week, and a smaller amount of foreigners. There was a lot less drama, and a lot more interesting music.

    Edmonton Punk Part 2

Last time my site was slowing down, I put together a gallery of all the local bands from Edmonton, my hometown. Now here's part 2, a collection of some of the touring bands that have passed through the city. This list is hardly complete because I usually refused to pay more than $10 for a show, and I skipped the vast majority of shows. Next time I'll put together some pictures of people around the punk scene not playing in bands or doing anything important, mainly because my friend Eric was bent out of shape he wasn't given enough attention in the last gallery. Surprisingly I agree, and will get around to this.
