Broke in Korea show

Paul organised a "Broke in Korea" show at Skunk Hell. There weren't many bands that could play, but I saw two young bands that turned out to be pretty cool. Invisible Man was different from everything else here, and NPU had a lot of stage presence for a young band. Later on Galaxy Express and a foreigner band played, but I didn't stick around because I was feeling like crap.

To correspond with the show, I released a new issue of Broke. This one had very little of other people's writing, mainly because I released the winners of the Brokey awards which took up something like seven pages, as well as a lot of stuff on the Slackers.

My favourite article in this issue is the Attacking Forces interview, partly because Yeongsoon wrote his answers for me all the way wherever the military has him stationed right now, and also partly because of Jongo's story about becoming a boxing champion. Also, it doesn't hurt that this article was bilingual, since both Yeongsoon and Jongo answered in Korean and their answers were translated by Jung and me.

That being said, there are four errors that have been brought to my attention.

  • In the Attacking Forces interview, I accidentally identify the lead singer of Captain Bootbois as Donghyuk, who is really the singer from Samchung. A simple typo and I got it right elsewhere.
  • Also in the Attacking Forces article, I translated the Konglish word "visual" to mean "stage presence," when according to Jongo it means "ugly." I really don't get it and promise not to lose any sleep over this one.
  • Bludklat is supposed to approximate the word "bloodclot," not some sort of bloodthirsty cat. It seems I'm the only one who was calling Adam "DJ Bludkat."
  • According to Anthony, the "For the Dogs" charity show which won a Brokey for best show of the year was not the first foreign-led charity for dogs. Apparently there was a show in Bar Nana called "CINDY" (Canines In Need Deserve You) which was run by a Scottish guy. I've never heard of it before and have no more information on it.

The last two issues have had somewhat more limited releases and haven't gotten the same circulation as the first two. They were both distributed solely at one show each. I haven't even uploaded the content online.

If anyone has spotted any other errors, or wants to write letters to the editor, I invite you to post in our board or send me e-mail, as it might be fun to have a letters to the editor section next time (the best part in most magazines after crosswords and obituaries).

    DJ Bludkat

I came out on Friday night because there were a couple special things happening. First, it was Adam's DJ debut as DJ Bludkat. He was DJing '80s music which you wouldn't catch me dancing to unless my woman was there unfortunately. And she ditched me.

Also it was Dorian's final weekend in Korea so I took him and Bryn out for a round.

Next Saturday should hopefully be exciting. Paul's trying to run a Broke in Korea show, and I'm going to be releasing issue 4 of the zine. Look for interviews with Attacking Forces on the front lines, 99 Anger, DJ Bludkat, and the Geeks. Also, I'll announce the winners of the Brokey Awards. Plus a new crossword and whatever else I cram in before Saturday.
