New Year's Eve

After midnight we returned to FF to see Sun Party, a combination of Waking Party and Sun Radio. I don't really remember how it was but there was a lot of dancing.

New Year's Eve

There wasn't a lot going on for New Year's Eve. We settled on FF, where there was unlimited alcohol for 25 000 won. For the rest of the night I wasn't seen without at least two rum & cokes. The highlight of the FF show was the Moonshiners. We didn't know many people there so we headed back to see what was going on at Skunk at midnight. When we arrived there was a band playing and probably nobody inside noticed. Outside it was a different story.

Christmas Eve

Over here it's still 2006 and were still stuck with Christmas Eve pictures. I'll get to New Year's soon.

Unfortunately I wanted to go home, so the last band I saw that night was Hollow Jan. I don't really remember their set well, unfortunately.

Christmas Eve

The two Chaos Class bands played back-to-back. Here are my pictures of the Explode and Angry Fists. The Explode had a whole bunch of signs posted everywhere with political sayings on them. Some of them pissed off a very short-tempered older guy who went berserk and did something stupid. It was after I left, but it's pretty annoying.

Christmas Eve

The most important set of the night to me was Blood Pledge, Orc's old band which hasn't played in years. Originally Blood Pledge was a Captain Bootbois sideproject with a different singer while Donghyun was in the army, but Orc brought his own style to the band. At this show they had a totally new lineup and it would be nice if they stick around for more than just one show.

I also want to see the return of Oi! Broker, Jiwoong's old band. These two guys need to get on stage again.

Christmas Eve

Mostly in this gallery we have Blind Alley and 13 Steps.

Christmas Eve

Here are more pictures from Christmas Eve. A lot of time was spent in the Santa costume, and I got pictures of a lot of kids sitting on Santa's lap and crying.

Recently at work I completed my 52nd choose-your-own-adventure story. And my mom told me when I was a kid that I shouldn't read those books. Anyway, here's one I threw together about the evil skinheads. I've never been to New Zealand so all of this is made up. See if you can find Verv and Marc.

Christmas Eve

We had quite a Christmas Eve. Santa showed up, Verv showed up, Laewal showed up, Mina showed up, and Blood Pledge played. There was a lot going on and I drank a whole bunch of cheap champagne. It'll take a while for us to get through all the photos from the entire night.

Sun Radio

You can see I'm pretty far behind here. These photos are from the Waking Party CD release. I have the pictures from the Skunk Christmas Eve show but they're not going to be ready for a little while.
Merry Christmas Fools

Here's a special Christmas surprise from the Yobs.

The Waking Party CD Release

Saturday was the night of CD releases. Shorty Cat had a CD release which I hear went pretty well. The only one I made it to was the Waking Party CD release. Here are most of the pictures. For some reason Sun Radio played last, and those pictures are coming soon.

The Deadly Vibes

It seems Paul made friends with an expat band from Taiwan, and invited them over here for a show. They played at Skunk on Friday night. The place wasn't packed, but it was a fun show anyway.

New Skinhead Cards

I've made two new but crucial skinhead cards. Last weekend Yunggi approached me requesting a new card. I agreed, as his old one didn't have the right amount of inyourfacity. This picture was available all along and I can't believe I didn't think about it. I've never taken a more terrifying picture of Yunggi. This is the day after the Champion tour in 2005, one of the most violent weekends in Korean punk's history. I hope he likes it.

Responses to skinhead cards range from extremely positive to extremely offended. They either give you chronic laughter or piss you off. If a skinhead were to "sell out" or "go for oi points" I don't think making their own collector card would be high on their list. This is more a silly photoshop project for me than anything.

The people look serious in the pictures but they're not necessarily posing for their own collector cards. I just happen to take those photos. The ones where they show any trace of irony work less well than the others. The cards are basically making a joke of all the seriousness of the people in the photos to lighten the mood. If you can't laugh at yourself, you're probably involved in the wrong counterculture.

See if you can find the second new card. It's hidden somewhere in the gallery. It's sort of a duplicate of an existing one.

MR27 Recording

Burke invited me to come down to the recording studio to help with backup vocals. We ended up doing five or six songs.

December 10 2006

MR27 in Spot

We're counting down MR27's final shows. We're going to lose something important when Burke leaves. Kim Ganji, the drummer, has decided to start his two-year military service when Burke's gone. Luckily Sidney will still be around, and he's planning to start a new band.

Here's a link that Sidney from MR27 found, featuring a 1966 Korean garage recording. The singer seems to be named Johnny Lee. Vega ripped it to mp3 for your convenience.

According to Sidney:

You can hear some more good songs in that blog. In fact there was a huge Psychidella/Soul scene was exist in 1968~1973. It was clampdowned by President Park Jung-hee's military regime. I recommend the songs like this :

Devils - What I Miss is You The most outstanding Soul band of korea. they used to play the songs of James Brown or Motown Soul.

Moojigae Quintet - Swell Girl Hard rock.

Add 4 - You're Burning My Heart the very first band of Shin Joong-hyun. A maestro of korean Rock music.

Shin Joonghyun and the Dirty Coins - Beauty A masterpiece of Shin Joong-hyun. after this album he arrested and totured by police. It was a start of clampdown....

He 6 - Waterbird Song
He 6 - Running Man
He 6 was a most popular rock band in this era. they were so famous like Rolling stones.

Dirty Small Town and Samchung in Spot

I showed up with Jung a little before midnight for a show at Spot. Lately they've been having midnight shows every Saturday, and it's been a very good idea. Everyone's always looking for something to do after the usual show at Skunk. It looks like they've found a nice little niche of people who are still looking for shows after midnight. Unfortunately I didn't photograph 13 Steps, but I got Dirty Small Town and Samchung. Plus, at the end of Dirty Small Town's set they got Jiwoong to sing an old Oi! Broker song. It was cool and Jiwoong has a lot more stage presence than I remember. Someone give this guy a band.

Soul Allnighter

Our dance turned out to be a big hit. We had some technical problems, and the only equipment available to us were our two laptops and a cable to connect ourselves to the sound system. Between sets we'd have to pull it out and hand it over. The first time we did this, it made some intense loud bangs. After that we had to turn down the house volume. Next time we'll hopefully have some kind of fader so we can do it ourselves.

The first to arrive were Jongo and Lacsumi, who were very helpful and managed to get us change for the front door float. The door was manned by Anthony at first, and then Jesse took over for the rest of the night. Thanks to Vega for taking pictures, as I was busy and only squeezed out six at the end of the night. All of you guys were a big help.

Jung showed up with a gang of her friends, which rounded out both the foreigner-Korean ratio and the male-female ratio. I kept her from working the door so she could continue to make the dance floor pretty-looking all night (but if you say it I'll punch you).

Our main goal with this night was to get people talking about the music. It's a great way to get boys and girls having fun together, which is sometimes difficult at punk shows. Having a healthy reggae, soul, or ska scene going gives everyone an excuse to dance and makes everyone happier.

Set List

My first set, from 11:00 to 11:45, started a little slow. By the end the room was filled up and ready to dance.

Bunny Wailer - Conqueror
Dillinger - Crabs in my Pants (it's funny because it sounds like he's saying "I have crap in my pants.")
Tommy McCook - When the Saints Go Marching in (I meant to play a different track and hate this song)
Black Beatles - Reggae and Shout
Rico Rodriguez - Japanese Invasion (my little tribute to the people of Pearl Harbor who died on December 6; hopefully not too tacky)
Dave Barker - Man Next Door
Danny Ray - Revolution Rock (the original, later covered by the Clash)
JD the Rock - Superbad
Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves (the original, later covered by the Clash)
Peter Tosh - Shame & Scandal (a request from Courtney)
Prince Buster - One Step Beyond (the original, later covered by Madness, a request from two people at the same time)
Seven Letters - Flour Dumpling (request from Burke, who wanted Simaryp - Skinhead Moonstomp. This is one of their side projects.)
Pyramids - Bam Bam Baji (request from Burke, who wanted Simaryp - Skinhead Moonstomp. This is one of their side projects.)
John Holt - OK Fred
Mighty Diamonds - Stoned Out of My Mind (a cover of a song by the Chi-Lites)
Roosevelt Singers - Johnny Reggae

Then there was an explosion, and Jonathan DJed for about an hour. I came back on and started with a skinhead set, but slowly switched over to two-tone ska.

Winston Shand - Matilda (a great skinhead reggae love song with a strong beat, now available for download)
Simaryp - Skinhead Moonstomp (Yes Burke, thanks for requesting the obvious.)
EK Bunch - Banana
Andy Capp - The Law
Soul Offrus - Ease Me Up Officer
Lloyd Charmers - In the Spirit
Prince Buster - Ten Commandments of Man
Hot Rod All-Stars - Ten Commandments from the Devil
Judge Dread - On the Beach (rudeboy mix) (another request from Burke)
Derrick Morgan - Big Eleven (Derrick Morgan's response to Judge Dread)
Specials - Stupid Marriage (I switched away from the skinhead stuff and played two-tone here)
Skadows - Ska'd for Life
Skin Deep - Come into My Parlour (a cover of an old skinhead reggae song by the Bleechers)
Millie Small - Carry Go Bring Come (live at the Playboy Club in Jamaica)
Slackers - International War Criminal (they're coming here in March!)
Fishbone - Ma & Pa (I think this was a request.)
Madness - House of Fun
Maroon Town - Average Man (this song got my best response all night)
Specials - Conquering Ruler (covering Derrick Morgan on their 2001 release of the same name.)
Bad Manners - Skinhead Love Affair
International Beat - Hands Off She's Mine (a request from Lorne; sorry I played it while you were in the bathroom)
Madness - Chase the Devil (off their recent Dangerman Sessions album, a Max Romeo cover)

Then I took an hour break and came back with this set.

Ska D Lite (Holland) - Run Joe
Operators (Canada) - One Day
Chris Murray + Slackers - Janie Jones (covering the Clash, now available for download)
Laurel Aitken - Jesse James
GG All-Stars - Barbabus (a request from Jongo)
New Establishment - Tell Me Something
Boris Gardner - Commanding Wife (dedicated to Jung)
Hopeton Lewis - Boom Shacka Lacka
Alibabky & Tajfuny (Poland) - Wash Wash Ska (who knew Poland had a ska scene in 1966?)
Count Prince Miller - Mule Train
Bob & Marcia - Young Gifted and Black
Mikey Dread - Barber Saloon (sorry it was so late, Paul)
Dandy - Reggae in Your Jeggae
Slackers - Sarah (a request by Courtney and...Sarah)
Corumn 80s (Malaysia) - Stop Da Pressure
Skanksters (Canada) - Ducky

I did another set later but it was clearing out and I didn't write anything down.

Here's Jonathan's playlist. Every song was awesome and I've never heard of any of these people.

Jonathan has more about the Soul Allnighter on his site.

This is not the last Soul Allnighter. We are planning to have another in January, this time on a Saturday night, and probably another one in February. Then in March of course there's the Slackers. I think this will be a winter thing only. It will definitely be in DGBD, and both Jonathan and myself are grateful to the DGBD people for all their support.

If you came and had a good time, thanks for your support and I ask that you drag everyone you can with you to the next one so we can have even more fun.

Soul Allnighter

This is a reminder that Jonathan and I are DJing at DGBD on Friday starting at 11:00pm. There'll be plenty of reggae, ska, and soul, and we'll have drink specials, so get your ass down there if you want to here some new sounds. Okay, incredibly old sounds.

It's our intention to showcase some of the sounds that inspired punk music and get everyone interested in a wider variety of sounds.

Jonathan posted this video to show the style of dancing that's usually used to Northern Soul.

Some small documentary

Looking at this video, it's no wonder the mods too so many amphetamines.

From the feature length movie Function at the Junction

Here is a documentary looking more at reggae and skinheads.

This is the only video to prepare you for what I have to lay down.

Bluch, that video's bringing back my food poisoning. Believe it or not, I actually found a cool version of that song. Even more surprising, I found a cover by Byron Lee that might possibly actually get played on Friday (but I'll probably use the original).

Dinner after Outbreak

I stuck around for dinner after the show.

Outbreak in Korea

Here are the Outbreak pictures. It was a pretty intense show, and the Korean hardcore kids always mosh up the place every time there's a foreign band coming through. This was no exception, and the Outbreak guys seemed pretty nice.

Outbreak in Korea

Today let's have a look at the Geeks. It's not really a short gallery.

Outbreak in Korea

Today you'll get a look at Join the Circle, featuring Sean of the adventure metal band Chosun Blade. Last weekend I climbed Gwanaksan with Sean which was documented on my other page.

Outbreak in Korea

I showed up a little early on Saturday so I could put up posters for our thing on Friday. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, especially Jesse who braved the cold to hold the posters for me.

It's Monday and I'm at home with food poisoning after having some tandoori chicken that wasn't quite cooked all the way through. No, it wasn't bird flu. I edited all the photos on Sunday and have been placing them online today. The show started with the Patience (not the Patients) and Things We Say.
