Hongdae Hoon

You might notice in these photos that there aren't many Koreans. A lot of them were out of town for the Discocks tour, which was in Busan this night. The show at Skunk was extremely small, so we spent most of our time in the park. Marc met up with his childhood friend Dan who recently moved to Korea. We all had a good time, and managed to get a picture of all the foreign skins. The only two not pictured are Jared who never gets the chance to leave his base, and Adam who's all the way down around Daegu and never made it up to Seoul. Anyway as you can imagine it was a night of drinking and fun, and left me feeling like I was underage again (not that I ever drank before I was 18 anyway [but I did bootleg for a lot of kids]).

Gangnam Hoon

The infamous Tokyohoon of WSN, my friend Marc was in town for the weekend on a business trip, so I promised to fill his off-time with as much drinking as his liver and criminal record could take. I met him for the first time last year when we went to Tokyo for the Korea/Japan Punk Festival. The pictures aren't online anymore but everyone around from then will still remember; it ended with Marc spending six days in jail. Ah, good times.

Anyway, Marc was late due to traffic from the airport, and we just barely made our reservation at Duori, a duck restaurant. The meal was pretty good although you could fool yourself into thinking you're eating ham out of a pumpkin. Appropriate for this time of year.

Next we went to the Big Rock Brewery, which imports Big Rock beer from Calgary. It's the stuff I used to drink all the time back in Edmonton. Big Rock is not known for certain things (like Amber or Warthog) but I discovered the black amber is pretty good. Unfortunately the place imports Big Rock from Canada and doesn't brew its own. The place is larger than I expected and feels more like a Korean hof than a Canadian pub. There was food but it was expensive looking. I will be back for sure.

MR27 Video

Jung registered on YouTube and posted a video of MR27 in Beijing. It's their song Baemsool, or Snake Liquor. I could never shoot video because my hands aren't steady enough. The video is also on the MySpace page for MR27, where you can hear some new songs.

In related MR27 news, my dad claims he used to look like Burke when he was young. That's frightening on too many levels. Burke, this is your future. That was the only picture I could find of my dad looking downward.

Also in MR27 news, I found the MySpace page of the drummer, Kim Ganji, who has done some interesting jazz music on his page. You have to scroll to the right because, well, it's a MySpace page.

Kingston Rudie Ska

I went to Bar Nana to see Kingston Rudie Ska. They were releasing a CD and I hadn't seen them in a while. They have a website now. It was a fun show as always but the only friends I could drag out were the ones not part of the Hongdae crowd.

Namjae Show

GMC was putting on another show, and a bunch of skinhead bands played. Rux was on the bill but Jonghee was still trapped in China after missing his boat. I was there before heading to Itaewon to see Kingston Rudie Ska, so I didn't take many band photos. The only band I photographed was Dirty Small Town who I haven't seen around in a while, but there are tons more candid photos, and the return of Sukie.

Return to Korea

Friday night at Drug was supposed to be the big return show for Suck Stuff and MR27. It didn't get a huge crowd, but the show itself was pretty good.

I have a lot more pictures coming this week, so stay tuned.

Military Holiday

The main reason I went on Sunday was to see Yeongsoon. He was let out of the army for Chuseok holiday, so I went and meet up with him. I'd recently seen him a couple months ago, and he got his band to play then too, but this set was better somehow. I think he's got about a year left in the military.

Military Holiday

I showed up for a Sunday night show again. Despite the fact that Suck Stuff, MR27, and Jonghee are all out of the country, there was still an impressive enough crowd.

The happiest moment of the night was seeing Sukie again, when Yumi brought her by Skunk. It has been probably over a year since I saw her last, but I think she remembered me. I didn't get a chance to try and ride her unfortunately.

This was the second time I saw Angry Fists play. I think they started off a little awkward but got over it quickly. They sounded good on stage but the sound on the floor was a little more overwhelming.

Also in this gallery I have a few other bands, Bad Idols, Shorty Cat, and Gukdo.
