I've walked past this statue several times, but this was the first time I did so after learning what it was, thanks to Ned Forney.

A few things worth pointing out here:

  • The current count of Korean lives saved by Dr Hyun is usually stated as 100,000, significantly more than 92,000.
  • They did not load refugees in lieu of military equipment. It was very obvious any abandoned materiel would later be used by the Chinese to kill people. There was apparently a movie that depicted this happening, but Ned says it has no factual basis. They loaded the equipment and then they crammed in the people in between, under, and atop the equipment.
